You'll first want to learn C++.

Take classes in college/high school or get a book, start basic "Teach yourself c++ in 21 days" type thing, if you're serious/motivated it should take you a month to grasp the language basically. Also lots of hands on experimentation will help you. GEt the free MS Visual Express 200X compiler and get to work, it's free and simple.

Once you have a grasp on pointers, functions, data structures, program flow, etc you'll be able to make text based games.

Once you've done that for a bit, move into 2D using a library like Allegro, or just jump right into OpenGL/DirectX if you want. Go get a book on either of those.

That should do it...and that's how I did it.

He replied, "I just kind of optimized for game play."

That's what I did, but I would just go for C++ these days, or maybe start with a simpler language like Java then move to C++ since java will teach you the basics of programming, but is a lot more 'safe' than C/C++, and should be easier to pick up...but if you're serious about writing high performance apps you should learn C and C++ , IMO.

I'm sure, just go to your local store and check them out and go with the one that appeals to you.
